Meek Mill is an American rapper, songwriter, and activist. He is known for his appearances on MMG’s Self Made compilation series. Meek was the executive producer together with Jay-Z on the documentary series, Free Meek, which is about his battle with the criminal justice system.
Robert Rihmeek Williams was born on May 6, 1987 in South Philadelphia to mother, Kathy Williams. Meek’s father was killed when he was five years old. He has an older sister, and her moved with them to North Philadelphia after his father’s death. The family lived in a three-bedroom apartment on Berk’s Street.
Their financial condition was poor where Kathy, Meek’s mother, started doing other jobs, cutting hair, and even shoplifting just to provide for her family. When Meek was a kid, he became acquainted with his father’s brother, who under the MC name Grandmaster Nell, a pioneering disc jockey (DJ) at that time and influenced rap artists like DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith. Meek became interested in hip hop as a result of these early influences and by the independent hip hop artists, Chic Raw and Vodka.
In his early teenage years, he mostly took part in rap battles under pseudonym or alias “Meek Mills”. Later that time, Meek and his three friends created the rap group, The Bloodhoundz. When he was 18 years old, he was walking to a corner store armed, and got arrested for illegally possessing a firearm and got beaten up by the police.
Their rap group Bloodhoundz lasted quite long enough to release four mixtapes. Meek released his fourth solo mixtape, Flamers 2: Hottest in tha City, in 2008 and produced the promotional singles “Prolli”, “I’m So Fly”, and “Hottest in the City”. The said album caught the attention of Charlie Mack, the founder and President of 215 Aphillyated Records, and was immediately signed to his management company.
On the same year, Meek met T.I., a rapper, record executive, and the founder and owner of Grand Hustle Records. T.I. was also impressed by Meek where he offered him an opportunity to travel, to meet with him and record label Warner Bros. Records. Meek received a deal with both record companies, and eventually chose T.I.’s label. However, Meek got arrested with a charged of gun and drug possession, and was ordered to serve for seven months in prison. Eventually, he was released in early 2009.
When he was still under Grand Hustle, Meek has formed a work relationship with disc jockey, DJ Drama. The two teamed up to released Meek’s third edition of his Flamers series. The mixtape was titled Flamers 3: The Wait Is Over, and was released on March 12, 2010.
Rick Ross announced on February 2011, that Meek is signing to his Maybach Music Group label. Meek later on released his debut single, Tupac Back, featuring Rick Ross from his label’s compilation album Self Made Vol. 1. On the same year, he released his second single, Ima Boss. Meek released “Dreamchasers” in August 2011, a mixtape featuring his urban hit “House Party” with guest appearances from Rick Ross, Beanie Siegel, Yo Gotti, and others.
Meek got listed as the no. 7 Hottest MC in MTV’s annual “Hottest MCs in the Game” list on February 2012. He released the second installment to his Dreamchasers series, and after six hours of its release on the mixtape website DatPiff.com, the Dreamchasers 2 was downloaded more than 1 million times. Meek’s third installment of the Dreamchasers series, Dreamchasers 3 was released on 2013, and features guest appearances like Akon, Rick Ross, Wale, Trina, Jadakiss, Waka FLocka Flame, and many others.
He also announced on October 26, 2012, the launch of his own record label imprint, Dream Chasers Records.
On June 28, 2015, he released his album, Dreams Worth More Than Money, and topped the Billboard 200. On July 21, 2017, his third studio album, Wins & Losses, was released.
Meek’s fourth album, Championships, was released on November 2018, which received positive reviews and sold 229,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. On November 20, 2020, Meek returned with a 4-track EP, Quarantine Pack, featuring rappers Vory, 42 Dugg, and Lil Durk.
In early 2015, it was reported that Meek and singer Nicki Minaj started dating. The two ended their relationship after 2 years on January 2, 2017. Mill has three children. He had his first child to then-girlfriend, Milan Rouge, and on 2020, Rogue gave birth to Meek’s third child.
In 2008, Meek was accused of drug dealing and gun possession which he was sentenced with 11 to 23 months in prison, followed by an eight years of probation. He was released later on in early 2009, under a five-year parole agreement.
In 2018, after his release from state custody, Meek immediately the leading advocate of Criminal justice reform in the United States with fellow recording artist and entrepreneur, Jay-Z and transitioned his advocacy into the co-formation of the REFORM Alliance Foundation.
Despite of having several controversies and legal issues, it did not hinder on Meek’s performances, where he continued to pursue his career in music, and released more mixtapes and albums to achieved an estimated net worth of $15.8 million as of today, 2021.
